Another poem

I decided to write a poem for every day in May as I worked through the responses from my beta readers to my cookbook, and also worked on editing a short creative non-fiction piece. Half way through the month I started looking over the poems I wrote at the start of the month, deciding if I should do anything with them, so that each day for the last half of May I was reviewing one poem and writing another.

Here’s the silly poem I wrote for May 2nd in response to a clickbait article.

How do fish sleep?

In their beds, I expect

because everywhere there’s a joker

even underwater, clowns

I’m not going to click on the video

swallow the bait

I think I already know how they do it

like the young guy I see walking down the street in the afternoons

eyes glued to his phone’s screen held determinedly

straight out in front of him

the fish turn the most parts of their tiny brains off

drift along the current from school to home to school

enjoying little fishy dreams

they’ll dart awake if there’s a tap on the glass

dash whichever way their fins take them.
