Let us be Bears – A poem

Let Us Be Bears
by Kilmeny MacMichael

Sleep when the sun rises less

lie wrapped tight in a place near each other

with enough room to turn but

not enough room to be alone

We’ll only wake when we’re hungry

on days of sunshine

We’ll walk blinking across hard thick frost slowly

then return to our beds stretching and yawning

satisfied with stars

with memories of aurora over head

We will wait for spring with no fever

no restlessness

We will slumber off the summer’s fat and heat

we will keep our thick claws ready

to pick clean our teeth.
